Sigh . . . Pardon me for a moment while I just sit and ruminate in the glow of happiness that is surrounding me after finishing this book. Loved it! I have yet to find a book written by Leighton that I haven't loved. She has a way with the written word that draws me right into the heart and minds of her characters. She is able to write so that I can truly experience the emotions of the characters. And for this book I just ended it feeling at peace with the rightness of the universe. If ever there was a happily ever after, this was it. Ahhhhhhh. . . .So, specifics:
Unlike the other books by Leighton that I have read, this book is not a paranormal/fantasy type book. This is straight young adult contemporary romance fiction. But like her other books, Leighton creates a swoon worthy male protagonist and an excellent match for him with her heroine. Unlike most romantic books that I read, this book is almost entirely told through the perspective of the man, Hardy. This can be a tricky thing for a female writer to focus all her energy on a male perspective, but Leighton does this beautifully. Not being a man myself, I can't completely judge whether or not this is an authentic male voice, but as a reader I was able to fully buy in to his views as being those of a man. And ultimately that is the most important thing. If I can accept Hardy as legitimate while I'm reading, then Leighton has succeeded as a writer, in my opinion.
Hardy is a stereotypical high school jock who has it all. He is the star quarterback of the football team, dating the gorgeous lead cheerleader, looking forward to a promising future as a potential pro player. But he isn't happy. At all. But like so many kids do sometimes, he just continues on living this life created for him because he doesn't have a reason or the courage to break free of it. All of that changes when he encounters Miracle. When he sees Miracle initially she is in the midst of chemo treatments for kidney cancer. Although her head is bare Hardy immediately notices her beauty and her joy for life. He can't stop thinking about this girl. But he continues living his life.
When Miracle shows up at Hardy's school a few months later, now with a full head of hair, Hardy is completely mesmerized. And so begins his slow path into her life. He definitely has some things to work through, a jealous and shallow girlfriend, an overbearing and abusive father, his own concerns about whether or not Miracle is even interested in his attentions. But Hardy works through all of this to find a way to make this relationship happen.
I won't go into great detail about the specifics of the plot. It is better to experience them gradually as you read. I will say a few of the things that I loved about the book and the one thing that kept this from being absolutely perfect (but still very amazing!). I loved Hardy. True . . . he does fall head over heels in love very quickly. But it seems believable. His emotions seem pure and honest, and while it might be a little alarming if my own child fell into that sort of intense (SO INTENSE) emotional bond with another person during high school, in the course of the story it feels right. Hardy is a master with words. He weaves the story of his love for Miracle throughout this novel, and it just makes my heart melt over and over again. Does any guy out there really say those sorts of things to his love? I don't know. I don't care. I'm just glad that I was along for the ride while Hardy expressed his devotion to Miracle. He remained devoted to her through everything, the good and the bad. I had a strong suspicion that he was going to give Miracle the wouldn't-it-be-amazing-if-your-boyfriend-ever-did-this-for-you gift at the very end of the novel. Viewing the whole thing objectively, it is probably true that the whole thing was entirely too convenient. I mean, what are the chances of Miracle's boyfriend having a perfect match for her kidney when she supposedly has such a rare blood type? But, hey, I don't mind suspending belief a little bit for a great story. And this is a great story.
The romance between Miracle and Hardy was super sweet. Leighton always manages to make me smile with the romances of her novels. And I smiled through this one a lot. It is always smile worthy when someone who has been through so much in life, already experiencing the disappointment of a boyfriend who left her when he couldn't handle her illness, finds someone who is so willing to do anything for them. I think one of my favorite scenes was when Hardy kissed Miracle's scar. She was so self-conscious about it and didn't want anyone to see it, and he managed in that one act to take away her fear and make her see that she was beautiful, scar and all. Beautiful.
If I had to pick one issue with this book it was that Miracle was just too perfect. I can't think of any flaw in her at all. She approached life with the perfect amount of joy and awe. She treated everyone kindly, whether they deserved it or not. She always had the right things to say and the right things to do. A lot of this probably had to do with the fact that she was being viewed almost entirely through the lens of Hardy's thoughts. Hardy could see no wrong in her, so as a reader I couldn't either. I'm not exactly wishing ill of her. I just think that she would have been even stronger of a character if she wasn't so amazing in every single situation. It would have been a bit easier to relate to her. Nevertheless, this was a minor issue in the book, and I still enjoyed her as a character despite this problem.
So this is another wonderful M. Leighton book that I recommend. It is a romance that will keep me smiling throughout the day today, I'm sure, and it is one that I will probably choose to re-read another time. I can't stop smiling. Yea!

"Tonight, you got your miracle. The day I saw you, sitting with Mila in the park, I got mine."
M. Leighton weaved a beautiful story with an amazing 100% swoon-worthy guy. Hardy Bradford is the new hottie on the block!
Hardy Bradford has life all planned out. He is a great football player, had a popular beautiful girlfriend, friends, and a bright future. But Hardy soon realizes is that he doesn't want any of the above. The football scholarship, the popular girlfriend, and bright future as a football player isn't his dream. Its someone else.
His dream comes in the form of a sweet green eyed beauty. With just a glimpse of her in the park Hardy is forever changed. Months later when she walks into his classroom Hardy knows that he would do anything to get to know her. Miracle St. James is his miracle.
Miracle St. James has a different view of life. She has been through alot in life and has learned to value every moment she has. Good and Bad. She doesn't let anyone ruin her. Not a jealous upset girlfriend, not an angry father, but most of all, not a sickness.
As Hardy starts to hang around Miracle he finally is able to stop living for others and live for himself. With Miracle he can be truly himself. Not someone his father wants him to be. Miracle understands him. Miracle can read him like a book. Miracle shows him the value of life and how to be a better person. Hardy would do anything to protect her and show her that he loves her more then anything in his life. She is his dream come true.So when Hardy is faced with the ultimate test he is dead set on protecting and saving the one person that it would hurt to lose. But will it all in vain? Will Hardy have to deal with the lose of his "Miracle"?
I cannot express how much I loved this book! Many people will compare it to A Walk to Remember and even with its similarities, this book will bury itself into your heart. It is mostly about Hardy and his journey and is told from a 3rd person point of view. You will fall in love with him and will melt with each word and each gesture of his. It might be an insta-love, and although I dislike those books, this story is so much more. This is about a guy finding the real meaning on life, not only through love but through the eyes of someone that values life and all its good and bad.
I highly recommend this book to any romance reader, any A Walk to Remember fan and any person that just wants to read a good book about love and life.

Hardy Bradford; eighteen a senior, football jock and the most gorgeous and sexy girlfriend (Cheyenne)
in school. He wasn't happy, something was missing. He thought about breaking up with Cheyenne
his girlfriend of 4 years. He realized she wasn't what he was looking for. But what was he looking for?
"Just a few more months he thought"
One day in the park Hardy came across a tiny framed girl, porcelain skin and delicate features.
He was mesmerized with her. She seemed to be happy and content with all her surroundings, the sun, the birds, even a single red balloon. She had incredible emerald eyes and she seemed to be bald under
the hat she was wearing. He lost track of her and felt a lost because he didn't even know her name.
5 months later, Hardy was busy in class when he looked up to discover the beautiful girl from
the park sitting next to him. The teacher announced the new student as Miracle St. James.
The attraction was immediate and the two became friends, and Cheyenne was hell on wheels.
It became clear that Miracle was ill, only he didn't know the extent of her illness.
"He wanted to love her and shield her, like a rare delicate flower."
As time passed Hardy knew Miracle was what he wanted and needed.
First he needs to break it off with Cheyenne.
This was a wonderful sweet story of young love, friendship, strength to believe in one self and
those you care for. The ability that hope is within reach if you just believe. Be prepared for
a few tears to fall, hope you enjoy has much as I did!
