This is a very good backstory for the Hindley/Brady murders. As a reader of true crime, of course I knew the story of the Moors murders. However, somehow this story eluded me. It was very interesting to hear from the viewpoint of a witness who ended up living with enormous guilt for feeling as if he did not do enough to help the victim, and also hatred from the public for his perceived involvement. This is a great study into the human psyche and how people will believe whatever is laid before them in order to try to make sense of the senseless. David Smith is a character that is difficult to like or even understand at first. But when you take into account his age at the time, his unfortunate childhood and the manner by which he was treated by the public after Myra and Ian were arrested, by the end of the book you are really cheering for him and yearning for him to find the peace that eluded him his whole life. He was truly a hero that probably saved countless children, not the villain so many people wanted to believe. He brings life to the central characters of the Moors murders, but this book is more about David Smith's life and struggles, especially in the wake of Hindley and Brady. I am glad that he was able to find some peace and happiness in his final years.

The book is interesting with a unique point of view of the moors trial. The beginning was slow and wasn't very good at keeping my attentiveness, but I am glad I kept on reading because it did get interesting and a page Turner. I would highly recommend this book.

I grew up in this area in the 60's and I can remember the horrors of this story as it unfolded. People in our village were pleased that David Smith had told his story to the police.
I found the book interesting and very moving.It is very descriptive but once I started to read I just had to finish it.
Well done David for writing the story it cannot have been easy to relive those days after you did the right thing...........may you rest in peace.
Sometimes when you do the right thing, consequences must be paid. David Smith sacrificed his entire life making the right decision and somehow, by the skin of his teeth, he survives. This is a life lived white knuckled.
For anyone interested in true crime, this memoir gives an insight into two of the most evil murderers in modern history. David Smith paints a picture of Manchester in the 1950s and 60s, the relationships and lives of Brady and Hindley and the families whose lives were shattered by their crimes. If you wonder about the impact on the lives of those who are affected by the fallout, this book certainly answers those questions.
Of the books written on this distasteful saga Evil Relations is probably the best by virtue of the vantage point of the writer.
As well as giving us a close up of B and H it also shows the stupidity of the English working classes -- a broad-brush statement I know but how could the persecutors of David Smith not see the obvious that he, single-handedly brought the Moors Murders to an end? If he had been party to the murders, and thus deserving of abuse, why would he have run immediately to the police risking all that he did? Did the morons beating him and his defenceless wife up ever ask themselves that glaring question? People rave on about wanting justice and their concern for children and make a big show of how outraged they are, making a public spectacle of their moral and holier-than-thou virtue for us to supposedly admire (puke actually) but then completely ignore due process. Justice be damned.
No, I wouldn't have wanted my daughters dating DS and to be frank I think he had a couple of screws missing -- his decision-making process seems at best a bit defective and, being a strong believer of karma and life-scripts, I think he was always asking for disaster albeit maybe not on the scale that eventually came about. The book not only gives a long-overdue account of DS and his involvement but also shows a graphic picture of a public so moronic that one is tempted to think that it brings trauma onto itself. It might be the wrong place and time to say it but the attitude of Keith Bennet's mother, and her blind condemnation of DS, is typical. How could someone like her not see that DS did society a massive favor. How could she not see that it was almost a certainty that other mothers would have suffered the same fate as she did had DS not blown the lid off the whole thing at great cost to himself. B and H had the perfect cover how could a respectable-looking, well-dressed couple with decent jobs be abducting, raping and killing children? The police hadn't, and probably wouldn't have, come close to figuring out something that had been going on for years. Nobody would suspect a woman. Hindley could approach children and even if she'd been interrupted could still have said that she was just concerned for the kid's safety when these terrible child snatchers were around. Foolproof.
We will never know who the children are/were who are still alive today because of David Smith. And these yobs are punching, harassing, spitting and peeing on him and Maureen in front of their children (children that the attackers purportedly are so concerned about)
Abuse of innocent, unconvicted people like DS by the retards they live with has happened many times before (Wallace, Maybrick, et al) and will happen many times again but maybe this book could go a short way to make people think twice.
This is a biography / autobiography for a wide audience on the Moors murderers, told by the witness of the last crime. The narrator alternates between David Smith and the reporter who wrote the book. After witnessing the brutal murder of the young Edward Evans, David Smith did what he believed was 'the right thing to do' and reported the crime to the police, only to suffer life-long consequences. This young man was born into the British lower class, without opportunities, without a stable childhood, but with a incredible will to adapt and survive in a world of smoking and drinking and council communities. Streetwise, tough, used to poverty, with a criminal record, but too innocent and naïve to identify real evil. During the sixties he got involved with the well-known Moors murderers when he fell in love with Myra Hindley's younger sister Maureen and married her at age 16. His story is a shocking and indeed a sad reflection on society.

Whether you a lover of true-crime stories, or interested in sociology or psychology, or just interested in people's personal narratives, this book will make a deep impression on you. Excellent, but disturbing read.
