I'm a big sucker for stories where an ordinary person is transported to an extraordinary world and the fate of that world hinges on Mr or Ms Ordinary. But this one just left me confused and with no desire to continue the saga.
We find out in the first few pages that Terisa is enchanted (cursed?) but we never find out why or how or wtf this curse even does. The best I can guess is that it makes her super horny for lecherous, creepy men with odd hairstyles. Seriously the description of Master Eremis is not flattering and we're supposed to believe all the ladies swoon and can't control themselves around him? I'm also flabbergasted with the notion that Terisa believes boffing him is the only way to find out who she is.
I'm still shaking my head at this story. I'd skip it. Donaldson is a great writer, and I have listed Lord Foul's Bane as a favorite, so I'm very disappointed at how flat this one fell for me.

I can't believe that anyone can give this less than five stars!!! I love this story; I love the characters; It totally rocks!
I read a lot of fantasy, and being in my mid-forties, I have read a lot. This is one of my go-to reads. It is romantic, magical, has lots of intrigue and politics, and takes me away from real life.
OK, there isn't the naughty bits like in "Outlander" (I only loved the first book of the Outlander series...the rest were flogging a dead horse), but this is wonderful escapism.
I was never able to get into the "Chronicles" series, but Mordant's Need is a classic to me.
Stephen R Donaldson creates a vibrant, violent world of imagery, ethics, and romance. His characters appealing, his world addictive, Donaldson puts the reader in the midst of a crisis and a mystery. Readers discover themselves in the process of understanding the novel's central puzzle. Ends on a cliffhanger, be sure to have Volume II ready!
I love Stephen R. Donaldson, and this was a welcome change of pace after reading the Thomas Covenant books.  Like Covenant, Terisa Morgan is transported magically into a fantasy world best upon by evil. Unlike Covenant, she's neither damaged nor an anti-hero. And unlike the Covenant series, Donaldson tells a compelling story in only two books. This is well worth the read, and is a very nice change of pace from some of Donaldson's darker books (The Gap series, for example).
I would like to give this book 5 stars, but it was very hard for me to get through at first. I am a very fast reader (I don't say speed reader because I'm sure I don't qualify), but when I first read this book, it took me three weeks to finish it. That's a long time for me. It took me probably 3/4 of the way through the book before I understood what was going on. The heroine is rather weak and annoying in this first story, as well. I'm happy to say that I finished the second book, "A Man Rides Through" in three days (these are big books), because 1 - I finally "got" the story, and 2 - Theresa got some back bone and some smarts.
I do recommend this 2 book set. It's an interesting and unique concept.
I bought both of these books years ago, just recently purchasing them in format. I think I've read them each 4-5 times. They continue to impress me with the development of the characters and the complexity of the story line. I've been a reader all my life and have many favorite books. I can honestly say that these are firmly in my top ten. I recommend them highly.
This is a reread for me, I read it some 20 years ago, loved it then and forgot it. Sorting through old books, I found it again,
and reread it. Wow! Still one of the best yarns, so well told, so imaginative, written with a rich vocabulary and proper english.
I whole heartedly advise you to give it a try, once you start, you'll have real trouble putting it down. For you info, I'm 77, with a fully active life,
I don't spend a lot of time reading as a rule, even though I've loved good tales for years.
This is such a good pair of books (the sequel is titled A Man Rides Through) that I have read them twice once about a decade ago and once just recently. The duo has it all romance, humor, action, intensity, likable and believable characters, a thoroughly believable fantasy setting, and a complicated plot that kept me guessing. In the world the heroine is invited into, mirrors are doorways into other places and times, including other worlds. It's quite a unique idea, and Donaldson does not shy away from the ethical issues such magic brings up are the images real independent of the mirrors which show them? Or do the mirrors create the worlds they show? Donaldson has so many elegant phrases and sentences that make me swoon--the language is just so gorgeous sometimes. It's a bit NC-17 sometimes, with a character who uses "sex as a weapon" to quote Pat Benatar.
